addiction and dysfunction
Hey ,
Ever find yourself wondering why you keep doing things that hurt you?
Like...
Why do you binge eat…
Drink too much…
Overspend…
Or whatever “your thing” is….
We all know these things are bad, but somehow we get in a cycle of using…
Why?
This is what you need to realize…
These actions are coping mechanisms in response to trauma.
Yes there are addictive/habitual elements to these activities, but there is also a root of pain.
Pain leads to negative coping…which gives you instant pleasure and relief from negative emotions…and since it’s (initially) positive feeling, you repeat the pattern until it becomes a habit or addiction.
Negative habits and addictions have two parts:
An internal part
And an external part
The external part is what we do, like binge drinking. The internal part is why we do it, like the emotional trigger that makes you feel scared, uncertain, and unloved.
Getting this?
It STARTS on the inside and THEN manifests in your behavior.
If you don’t deal with all the inner “stuff” that’s triggering the bad behavior, you’re going to be “white-knuckling” your way through life and recovery.
And that’s not fun at all 🙂
So, what are your bad habits or addictions?
You're probably aware of SOME, and not aware of others…
It's the ones you're not aware of that really hurt you. Take a moment to reflect on the pain these habits are causing in your life.
Identify the bad behaviors and start solving that problem.
Here’s a quick plan to start:
Acknowledge your habits: Recognize and admit the behaviors that are hurting you. Write them down.
Identify triggers: Reflect on what emotional triggers lead to these habits. Are you feeling scared, uncertain, or unloved?
Replace the habit: Find healthier ways to cope with these triggers. Try exercise, meditation, or talking to someone you trust. This changes the external aspect, and can also address the inner aspect if you use a tool that addresses the root.
Process the root: Utilize processing tools (like I teach in this YouTube video) to address the underlying reasons and traumas that are driving your negative habit or addiction.
Be patient: Healing is a process. Be kind to yourself and take it one day at a time.
Imagine a future where you’re no longer held back by these negative coping mechanisms.
Picture yourself living a life filled with joy, love, and fulfillment.
This isn’t just a dream…it’s within YOUR reach.
You have the power to break free from these patterns.
You are NOT defined by your past or your trauma.
By acknowledging your habits, identifying your triggers, and processing the root causes, you CAN reclaim control of your life.
Every step you take towards healing brings you closer to that brighter future.
You’ve got this.
You are stronger than you think.
Keep moving forward, one step at a time.
