anti-suppression
Hey ,
Most people have been trained to shut down their emotions the second they feel them...
I know I did.
I developed such a powerful habit of immediately suppressing emotions that I couldn't even cry when I wanted to.
My entire body would be screaming at me all day...
But I couldn't let any of it out... no matter how hard I seemed to try.
Sound familiar?
Yeah.
Here's what nobody tells you about emotional suppression...
It becomes SO automatic that even when you WANT to feel... you literally can't.
Your nervous system gets stuck in permanent shutdown mode.
I remember lying in bed at 3am...
Knowing I had decades of pain trapped inside me.
Wanting desperately to just... let it out.
But every time I tried to access those emotions?
Nothing.
My face stayed firm and unmoving…
Not a single tear came out…
Even though I knew that's ALL my body wanted to do.
Then I had a thought that changed everything...
"What if... instead of habitually shoving emotions down... like I have been for my entire life...
I tried doing the exact OPPOSITE?
What if I went into a state of complete anti-suppression, where I allowed every and all emotions to bubble up and come out... however they needed to manifest?"
I figured I had nothing to lose...
My life was already in shambles... to say the very... very least.
So I sat down and tried to cry...
And?
Nothing.
The emotion just stayed there.
Locked away behind years of automatic suppression.
But here's what I learned after many... many hours of trial and error...
Your body REMEMBERS how to release emotions.
You just have to reverse YEARS of conditioning that taught you to shut down.
It's like learning to walk again after being paralyzed.
The ability is there... but the pathways are blocked.
Here's how I broke through...
I stopped trying to FORCE emotions out.
Instead, I created the opposite of suppression.
Complete... total... anti-suppression.
I relaxed every muscle in my body.
I told every protective part of me: "It's safe to feel now."
I welcomed whatever wanted to come up.
And slowly... very slowly... the dam started to crack.
First just a trickle of sadness.
Then more. And more.
Until finally... the floodgates opened.
20 years of suppressed pain came pouring out all at once.
I'd like to say everything magically got better after I learned the skill of releasing emotions...
But, ummm... it didn't. Haha.
I mean it depends on how you define 'got better'...
Because things DID get better, because I DID develop an essential skill needed to heal...
BUT...
Now that I had this skill of releasing emotions?
I had to actually DO IT.
I had to actually FEEL and RELEASE the pain.
Mhmmm... no fun!
But extraordinarily healing.
Here's what happened next...
After I let out a wave of emotion, I would get SO exhausted and take a nap or fall asleep.
Now... at that time in my life I barely slept because of all the emotions I had pent up in my body.
The only sleep I got was when my body was just so physically exhausted that I passed out.
So every night I ran a little experiment on myself...
Although releasing emotions was painful... it also put me into a tired, relaxed state after I completely purged what was in my system at the time.
So every night I released all emotion in my body...
And was able to magically fall asleep.
For the first time in YEARS.
Here's what I want you to understand...
If you can't cry when you want to...
If you feel numb when you should feel angry...
If your emotions feel locked away behind a wall...
You're not broken.
You've just been trained to suppress so automatically that you've forgotten how to feel.
But your body remembers.
And with the right approach... you can reverse years of emotional shutdown.
The key is anti-suppression.
Instead of pushing emotions away... you welcome them forward.
Instead of clenching up... you relax completely.
Instead of "being strong"... you give yourself permission to be human.
Try this tonight...
Lay down somewhere comfortable.
Relax every muscle in your body.
And ask: "What wants to be felt right now?"
Don't try to force anything.
Just create space. And wait.
Your body has been waiting YEARS to finally express what it's been holding.
Give it permission.
The relief on the other side is worth every uncomfortable moment.
