repetition compulsion
Hey ,
You’re driving down a familiar road, the sun setting just right, and suddenly, a wave of unease crashes over you.
It’s not the road...
It’s a memory...
Something buried deep in your subconscious is bubbling up...
Your heart races, palms sweat...
Why does that happen?
Because trauma has a sneaky way of hiding in the corners of our minds...and making surprise appearances when we least want or expect it.
We all have patterns...
Habits that we fall into without thinking.
But for those of us who’ve faced trauma, these patterns can be more like traps…
Freud called it "repetition compulsion"…the brain’s attempt to "complete" what’s unresolved by...
You guessed it...
Repeating it.
It's like we're stuck in a loop, unconsciously repeating old patterns until we finally resolve them.
…or…more commonly…
We just ruminate on them and drive ourselves insane lol.
Have you found yourself in the same toxic relationships?
Or maybe you keep taking on more and more at work until you burn out?
These aren’t just coincidences...
They’re reenactments of the past.
Your brain is trying to make sense of the trauma by...reliving it.
For example…
We see it all the time, someone who grew up with unstable parents unconsciously finding themselves drawn to unstable relationships as an adult.
Their mind is trying to "solve" the original problem... by recreating it.
Or…
Someone who grew up with a perfectionist parent, they often become workaholics who set impossible standards for themselves as adults.
Their mind is trying to "solve" that old need for approval...by creating endless new chances to prove their worth.
Trauma leaves you with fragmented memories...
Pieces of a puzzle that don’t quite fit together.
And so, your brain tries to "solve" the puzzle by recreating it...over and over.
But since the trauma is so intense…
Since it has SO much emotional charge to it…your brain can’t processes like normal memories.
This is why it takes conscious effort to heal from trauma…
You can’t just “sleep it off”….
(although optimizing your sleep will have TREMENDOUS and incredible impacts on your life and recovery, as it’s your brains natural time to process memories and information…. meaning: little or poor sleep = little or poor processing)
Healing isn’t something that just “happens” with time.
Those moments when you feel like you’re stuck on repeat... facing the same battles... making the same mistakes?
It’s not your fault.
It’s your brain’s way of trying to heal...even if it doesn’t feel like it.
But here’s the good news... you can break free from this cycle.
Yes... it is possible.
But it requires something that’s both simple and incredibly challenging: awareness.
The first step is recognizing the patterns... seeing how your trauma is playing out in your daily life.
And here’s where it gets even harder...
Because breaking the cycle means making different choices and often scary uncomfortable choices.
But just ask yourself….
Would you rather face the discomfort of change?
Or the lifetime of pain if you keep repeating these same traumatic patterns for life?
The choice?
As usual…is yours :)
