why does this trigger me
Hey ,
I surveyed over 100 people who suffer with PTSD…
And guess what EVERY single person put in their top 3 biggest problems?
Triggers.
What what are triggers?
Well…they’re actually a natural part of your brain’s response system…
Triggers are just recognition patterns…to the EXTREME.
You see…
When you see, hear, smell, taste, or feel something your brain builds a recognition pattern of that event.
So whenever you experience something similar in the future, your brain recalls the same feelings and emotions even though you're in a different scenario.
Now this is a normal and GOOD process your brain does…
Because it allows you to be more efficient, learn, and grow as a human.
BUT…
When you go through a trauma?
This process is just downright painful.
Because when you're put into a situation that reminds you of the trauma?
Your brain automatically recognizes that pattern and reacts to it as if you were experiencing the SAME trauma again.
You feel all the same emotions, feelings, memories, thoughts, and beliefs...
Your brain + body basically re-live the trauma again and again.
This is why you can jump at a door closing...not slamming…closing.
It's not that a closing door scares you….
It's that your brain runs a recognition pattern with a noise, causing you to re-experience the same emotions as if you were in danger.
So instead of reacting to reality, you end up reacting to old sensory data your brain collected from the trauma(s) you experienced.
BUT the real question is...
How do you STOP triggers?
Great question!
The first step in overcoming your triggers is…
Awareness.
AKA learning what they are and why they happen.
The simplest way to do this is just by reflecting over the past week and making a list of everything that triggered you.
Once you're aware of your triggers?
You can do 3 things:
Avoid them
Alleviate them
Process them
When you’re healing you want to minimize as many triggers as you possibly can…
AND minimize the impact of each trigger.
This will stabilize you and your life more than I can say.
The more stable you can make your life?
The easier, faster, and more productive your healing will be.
And for all the triggers you can’t avoid or eliminate?
You need to develop a plan to alleviate them once they do come up…
Via coping/relief tools.
(there are 9 great ones here in this book we wrote — it’s a direct link to the pdf)
Once you stabilize…
Aka, avoid + allevaite triggers…
The next question is…
How do you get rid of triggers?
By processing the root…
You have to process all the traumatic emotions, feelings, memories, thoughts, and beliefs that reside in your brain.
Once you fully process the root of your trauma, you're fully and 100% healed…
And triggers?
Are gone.
Processing, when done right, eliminates the root and triggers for good.
So…
Triggers DON’T have to control your life forever.
Awareness → stability → processing
That's the path.
And once you walk it?
You're free….
For good.
